Drupal and responsive/mobile-first design
With many reports last year confirming the rise of mobile internet use (just one example here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14731757) - the really important statistic is that almost 50% of internet access is now achieved via mobile devices.
What this means for you as a "Drupalista" is that you must now be addressing Responsive Web Design/Mobile-First approaches - as this figure will continue to grow rapidly through 2012 and beyond.
Looking forward, the very good news is that for Drupal 8 the "mobile initiative" is alive and strong - meaning there is "a concerted effort to make Drupal 8 a first-class mobile platform": http://groups.drupal.org/mobile/drupal-8
But, what should you be doing right now with your current Drupal website projects. The major take away here is that you should theming new websites (or re-theming existing ones) with a truly "responsive" base theme - like the excellent Omega or Adaptive Theme. I have used both for different client sites and found them extremely easy to use as a base theme with all the "responsive magic" working for you just about straight "out-of-the-box". It kinda means you get three websites for the cost of one in terms of effort (one for desktop, one for tablet and one for mobile). Give them a try.
So, there really is no excuse for not providing your clients with a truly responsive web presence moving forward. They and their visitors will be very grateful and Drupal will be seen in a much more positive light if Drupal sites are properly rendered for the mobile device.
ATTENTION POTENTIAL WEBSITE CLIENTS: Needles to say, I now develop all my client sites with truly responsive themes ready for mobile from the word "Go".
ATTENTION THOSE CONSIDERING MY THEMING COURSE: Again, my Theming Drupal course includes how to achieve a responsive (mobile friendly) custom theme for your Drupal websites.
