"Pay Per Click" advertising - is it right for your business?

Having a brand new shiny website is one thing - getting your new website in front of potential customers is another - and can be a challenge.

There can only be ten, or so, websites that appear on page one for a particular keyword combination (search query). How can your business address this issue effectively?

The way around that is to pay for your position on page one and this is what "pay per click" (PPC) advertising is all about, with the most popular system being Google AdWords.

But will this work for your business in your market sector? The answer is - it is very hard to know until you try. The good news is that with the right help - "trying" it out is not expensive.

There are two major factors that will dictate whether or not PPC advertising might be right for you.

Firstly, if you are in a niche market, you are in luck, as the chances are that the cost per click of keywords like "dog winter jackets" is not too high - as Google sets the rate based on how much competition there is for these keywords. Something like "cheap CDs" or "buy DVD online" etc. would be quite a different story.

Secondly, the average value of your typical sales transaction is important. If it costs you on average £10 to win each sale and the sale is only worth £15 - that is not a viable ROI (return on investment). However, if through your PPC campaign you can convert a every 100th visitor to a sale (e.g. 100 clicks needed at 10p per click) - that is just £10 spent per sale. If your average transaction value is £500 - well then we are in business.

Let me state up-front that you can sign up at Google and create your own AdWords campaigns right now. You do not have to enlist the help of anyone. However, you can make some expensive mistakes before you realise you are making them. To get the most out of any Google AdWords campaign - a little know how and experience does help.

This is where I can help - building and optimising your campaign, including the landing page at your website to ensure a lowest cost-per-click possible.
